Season tickets on Indian Railways offer a cost-effective and convenient way to travel, allowing unlimited travel within a defined period. They provide significant economic benefits for frequent commuters and eliminate the hassle of purchasing individual tickets, ensuring a comfortable and flexible commuting experience.
The salient features are enumerated below:
  • A Season Ticket is a ticket that one can use repeatedly during a certain period, without having to pay each time. 
  • It is specially suited for passengers who commute daily between a fixed pair of station.
  • Season Ticket is a  journey ticket, issued for journey on suburban and non-suburban sections for travel in first class and second class only.
  • Season tickets are classified into Monthly, Quarterly, Half yearly and Annually.
  • Maximum distance is upto150 km. Season tickets for more than 150 kms are issued only on those sections where they were being issued prior to 1951. Presently GM has been delegated to issue beyond 150 km.
  • Second Class Monthly Season Tickets are charged at 15 times of single journey ordinary fare. First Class Monthly Season Tickets are 4 times of Second Class Season Tickets. 
  • Quarterly Season Ticket is  2.7 times of Monthly Season Ticket.
  • Half yearly Season Ticket is 5.4 times of Monthly Season Ticket.
  • Yearly Season Ticket is10.8 times of Monthly Season Ticket.
  • Children fare is half of the adult season ticket fare.
  • Rounding off of fare for season ticket will be in next 5 rupees.
  • Season ticket cannot be cancelled once issued.
  • Reservation for berths will not be given to the season ticket holders. Journey by restricted trains is not permitted. 
  • Second Class Season Ticket holders are not permitted to travel in sleeper class. 
  • Similarly First Class Season Ticket holders are not permitted to travel in AC Chair/AC three tier.
  • They are permitted to travel in higher class on payment of difference of fare. 
  • Extension of journey on season tickets is permitted. 
  • Season ticket holders are permitted to travel by booked route only. However, long distance season ticket holders are permitted to travel by short distance. 
  • Renewal of Season ticket can be done 10 days before the expiry date. 
  • Divyangjan, Person with Visaul Impairment, Person with Hearing and Speech Impairment and Mentally Challenged Persons with escorts are allowed 50% concession for both. 
  • Minimum charge is not applicable when season tickets are issued on concession. 
  • It can be issued on any day of the month. 
  • Excess luggage beyond the free allowance can be booked and charges are collected at as per the rate applicable.
  • Break journey rules are not applicable in Season Tickets.
  • Only one season ticket is issued per passenger and when a passenger is detected using two consecutive season tickets, the additional season ticket is treated as invalid and will be confiscated. 
  • Refund on unused or partially used season tickets is not granted. 
  • Renewal of season tickets can also be done through ATVM but no discount or bonus will be given. 
  • Issue and renewals of season ticket can also be done by STBA, a service charge Re 1/- per passenger prescribed in the scheme is applicable to all types of non – concessional tickets i.e non – suburban and season ticket.  
  • Through Co-TVM Season Ticket can also be issued (Maximum 1 passenger). 
  • Issue of Season tickets and renewals can also be done by STBA.
  • A service charge Re 1/- per passenger is collected on all types of non – concessional tickets i.e non – suburban and season ticket. 
  • Provision of discount of 0.5% to customers of suburban section on booking of Season tickets when payment is made through digital means.

       Superfast  Charge

  • For travel in Superfast Train season ticket holder have to purchase Supplementary ticket separately. 
  • If he wants to travel frequently then he will be issued Monthly / Quarterly supplementary ticket.
  • Monthly supplementary charges will be 15 times the  normal supplementary charge.  
  • If a Superfast train runs upto 325 Km or less there is no need to purchase supplementary charge ticket. 

       Identity Card 

  • Identity card is mandatory with season ticket during journey, otherwise  will be treated as without ticket. 
  • Photo Identity card is issued by the Railways for a nominal fee of Re 1 and is valid for 7 years. 
  • A photograph should be firmly pasted in the place provided. 
  • The columns in the season tickets are filled by the booking clerk duly signed and stamped.
  • Information on season ticket are as follows – Passenger Name, Age, Sex, Identity card number, Date of issue, Valid up to, Between Stations, Class etc. 
  • The serial number of the identity card should be recorded on the season ticket. 
  • In absence of Identity card, Pan Card / Voting Card / Driving license or any other numbered Identity card issued by Govt. office will be accepted. 

    Season Tickets for Students 

  • 50% concession on season ticket fare is given to students only in MST and QST. 
  • The age limit is as under:-
  • a. General categories students – Upto 25 years age.
  • b. SC/ST categories students – Upto 27 years age.
  • c. Research categories students – Upto 35 year age. 
  • Season tickets to students of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes shall be issued as under: – 
  • (i) MSTs: On payment of 50% below the normal Student MST fares, and 
  • (ii) QSTs: On payment of 2.7 times of the concessional fares of MSTs .
  • Free Monthly Season Ticket to Students. 
  • Free MSTs are available to students  for commuting daily between the stations serving the place of residence and school. 
  • For girl students upto the level of Graduation in professional / vocational courses. 
  • For boy student upto 12th standard. 
  • Millennium Gift will be printed on these season tickets.

 Free MSTs to Girls students upto Graduation and Boys students upto 12th Standard 

  • Free Monthly Season tickets to girls pursuing Professional/Vocational courses upto Graduation. 
  • Conditions for issue of free Monthly Season Ticket to Students 
  • Only MSTs are issued. QSTs are not issued. 
  • Maximum distance of travel150 km. 
  • Issued for Second Class only, not valid for travel in Mail/Express train and superfast trains. 
  • No other surcharges are levied.
  • Luggage with Season Ticket. 
  • Free Allowance and Marginal Allowance for Season Ticket holders are as under . 
  • First Class | Free Allowance 15 Kg |Marginal Allowance 5 Kg. 
  • Second Class | Free Allowance 10 Kg |Marginal Allowance 5 Kg. 
  • Free Allowance and Marginal Allowance for Market Vendor Season Ticket holders are as under . 
  • First Class | Free Allowance 15 Kg |Marginal Allowance 5 Kg . 
  • Second Class | Free Allowance 10 Kg |Marginal Allowance 5 Kg . 
  • Season Tickets through UTS on Mobile .
  • Paperless Season Tickets can be booked through UTS on Mobile App. 
  • The Season ticket can be issued/ renewed from mobile application and it will be valid from the next day of booking the ticket.
  • No need of GPS for issue/renewal of Season Ticket.

Vendor Season Ticket 

    • These tickets are issued from stations of market produce areas to near by towns and cities for selling their market produce. 
    • Only adult season tickets are issued. 
    • Issued for travel in Second Class only. 
    • Maximum distance is 150 Km. 
    • Charged at 1.5 times of the normal monthly season ticket fares. 
    • Just like normal Season tickets Photo-identity card is also issued. 
    • Free allowance of luggage is 60 kgs for outward journey and for return journey only empties are permitted. 
    • Luggage in excess of the free allowance can be booked at the applicable rates. 
    • Un-booked luggage in excess of the free allowance will be charged at 6 times the scale “L” subject to a minimum of Rs.50/-. 
    • Market vendor season ticket holders are not permitted to sell their goods in trains, railway platforms and in railway premises.
