Scouting in Indian Railways

All General Managers observed on the importance and relevance of Scouting activities in the Indian Railways as under: ‘The Scouts and Guides movement’ which is worldwide one, aims at building character and inculcate a sense of discipline in those who join the organisation. In IR it is a matter of pride that the Railway’s Scouts and Guides have always risen to the occasion and done appreciable work during major accidents and disasters. Society is plagued with negative values as increasing crime rate, drug abuse,alcoholism and suicides, The Scouts and Guides movement has answer to all these evils.

A large number of Railway staff come in contact with public. Their courteous behaviour towards the user and uprightness in dealing will go a long way in building the Railways image. As such those who have gone through the scouts movement are likely to prove more effective as Railway person in day to day discharge of their duties. In order to give impetus to this movement in Indian railways, the Ministry of Railways have provided the following facilities: Leave, Passes, TA/DA to railway employees on scouting duties, Recruitment – Pursuant to the issue of the Master Circular No.1/90 dated 20.8.1990 instructions have been amended and several new orders issued on the policy. Finally the benefit we get from Scouts and Guides is by learning while doing. The training and exposure at Scouting makes us self dependent, disciplined and a good law abiding citizen. We can also pursue different proficiency courses and improve our skills. Scouting activities gives a lot of exposure in dealing with all eventualities of life.
